Comparing Continuous Conduction Dryers

Conduction drying is one way to handle heat-sensitive material, control a drying process atmosphere to ensure final product quality, or use a waste-heat source to cut energy drying costs.  Last week's post discussed classifying drying methods, how a conduction dryer works and looked at the types of batch conduction dryers.  This post compares the types of continuous conduction dryers.

A continuous conduction dryer can dry heat-sensitive solutions, slurries, pastes and granules containing pigments, gypsum, clays, fine chemicals, fine coal and salts, and can be used for relatively short retention times.  The dryer conveys as well as dries the material; controlling the conveying speed controls the retention time.  The continuous conduction dryer requires no material-handling labor, making its operating cost typically much lower than that of a batch unit.

Some features vary by dryer type, including how efficiently the continuous dryer can convey as well as dry your material and what related equipment is needed to feed and receive the material and handle the dryer's exhaust gas.  The unit typically operates at atmospheric and slightly negative pressures.  Fuel requirements range from 1.0 to 2.0 pounds of steam per pound of water evaporated, depending on the material's required final moisture content.  As with a batch unit, the continuous dryer is available in sizes from lab- to full-scale production.  Its energy costs also depend on the material and how much agitation or evacuation your application requires.

Several types of continuous conduction dryers are available:  steam-tube rotary, drum, screw conveyor, vibrating tray and indirect multiple disc.

A steam-tube rotary dryer consists of a horizontal, cylindrical rotating vessel heated by steam-filled tubes fastened to the vessel wall.  Heat transfers through the tubes to the material as it flows through the vessel.  The dryer is typically used to dry fibers and free-flowing powders, particularly chemicals and low-density powders such as foodstuffs.

A drum dryer typically has one or two horizontal, heat-jacketed rotating drums.  The drum rotation not only facilitates heat transfer from the vessel wall to the material but also moves the material toward the outlet.  The drum dryer can dry liquid solutions or slurries to flakes or dusty powders, as well as flowable pastes or sludges.  The unit can be expensive to maintain because the bearings for the rotating mechanism must be oiled frequently and, with a two-drum unit, the drums must be kept in alignment to ensure process consistency.

A screw conveyor dryer typically consists of one or more rotating screws inside a horizontal,  cylindrical heat-jacketed vessel.  The heating media is steam or hot water.  Each screw can also be heated.  As the screw shaft rotates, the vessel wall and screw flights conduct heat to the material and push it through the dryer.  The dryer can dry non-sticky, low-moisture-content granules, crystals, fibers and free-flowing powders, and it can recover some solvents.  The unit can be used as an auxiliary dryer to remove moisture from a material that will later be heat-treated at very high temperatures.  Such predrying is more efficient than removing moisture during the heat-treating process.  Despite the dryer's continuous mode, it can also be operated under vacuum.

A vibrating tray dryer consists of a rectangular heat-jacketed vessel containing one or more heated metal trays.  The tray vibrates the material and moves it toward either the dryer outlet or the next tray.  The dryer can handle free-flowing powders as well as granules, crystals and fibers that can be conveyed via vibration.  The dryer is mechanically more stable than a screw conveyor dryer, so it can dry at higher temperatures for applications such as ceramics and clays used as catalysts.

An indirect multiple disc dryer, such as Heyl & Patterson's MultiDisc Thermal Processor, consists of a horizontal trough-shaped vessel, containing two or more rotating shafts mounted with discs.  The large-surface-area discs are heated.  As the shafts rotate, the discs contact and transfer heat to the material while gently dragging rather than pushing it through the vessel.  The dryer can handle slurries, sludges, pastes, free-flowing powders, granules, crystals and fibers.  The discs also break up lumps, making the dryer suitable for handling soil, extrudates and other lumpy materials.  The shaft speed and disc temperature can be varied without affecting the material's retention time.  Drying is efficient at low temperatures because the shaft speed and disc temperature can vary from module to module.
